Likelihood vs. impact: scoring risks honestly
How to use a five-point scale without pretending to know the future.
Published 18 Oct 2026
The risk matrix in this platform uses two five-point scales: likelihood (how plausible is it that this happens within your horizon?) and impact (how badly would it hurt if it did?).
The score
The score is simply likelihood × impact, from 1 to 25. It is a way to compare risks with each other - not a probability.
Tips for honest scoring
- Score individually first, then discuss differences.
- When evidence is weak, say so in the evidence field rather than lowering the score.
- Pay special attention to high-impact risks, even if they seem unlikely.
- Reassess after every test or major change; the platform keeps the history.
